MEET THE MUSE: Conversations with Teen Muse Will Stuermer
What inspired you to travel to Zambia?
My mother inspired me to travel to Zambia
Did the trip live up to your expectations?
The trip lived up to my expectations but was still very different then i thought it would be. The experience left me with a different sense of accomplishment than I expected.
What did you learn about issues affecting girls in rural Zambia?
I learned that the issues that affect girls in rural Zambia are actually very similar to the issues seen in the states, but they just have no place to talk about them and get help.
Please share one or more moments that had an impact on you and why.
One moment that will stick with me is when we were painting the pre-school and a huge crowd gathered to watch us. Being told that all those kids were done with school and chose to stay and watch us was really neat.
Why do you feel this sort of travel is important?
I feel like this sort of travel is important because it is key in fully exploring the culture of the place you are traveling to. Not only exploring the landscape and animals but also connecting with the people is very important.
How has the experience changed you or shifted a belief about yourself or the world?
The trip showed me that the world is a very big place and that my problems really aren’t that important. It also taught me that what some might see as little acts of help can hugely impact people in need.
How will you utilize what you learned on this trip?
I will hopefully utilize connections I have made in Zambia to continue to help. I will also utilize some of the things I learned about traveling .
Why should someone else go on this trip?
Someone else should go on this trip if they like exploring and seeing a culture so different than their own.
